There is a particular kind of misery that only happens on a January morning, when you finally gather the courage to swing your legs out from under the duvet, shuffle down the hall in thick socks, and step onto a bathroom tile so cold it genuinely hurts. Your breath clouds in the mirror. The window has a thin rime of frost along the bottom edge. You turn the shower on full hot and stand outside the cubicle for a solid ninety seconds, waiting for the room to even feel habitable. By the time you've finished, your hair has dried into a shape you didn't ask for and the electric bill for that one shower has been quietly accumulating the entire time.
That was me for years. I lived with it. I told myself the cold was character-building. I blamed the 1930s plumbing and the single-pane window. Then, in late 2024, I decided to actually do something about it — and what followed was two winters of installing, returning, replacing, and obsessing over every bathroom heating product I could find in Europe. Some of it worked. Some of it was a waste of three hundred euros. Here is what I'd actually recommend to anyone trying to keep a bathroom warm in winter 2026 without watching their electricity bill double.
What I actually use in my own bathroom
My bathroom is around 6.5 square metres, with one external wall, one frosted window, and a tiled floor on top of a concrete subfloor. None of those things help. The previous owner installed a basic 1000W electric wall heater in 2008, which still works but sounds like a small jet engine and smells faintly of dust for the first ten minutes every time you switch it on. What I landed on, after roughly eighteen months of testing, is a layered approach. There is no single piece of equipment that heats a cold bathroom well. Heat rises, tiles conduct cold straight up from the slab, and a single 2000W unit running for an hour will leave you with a warm ceiling and freezing feet. The wins come from stacking small, targeted improvements — and the total cost was honestly less than I expected.
The seven things I use daily, in rough order of impact, are:
- A 750W infrared panel mounted above the door. This was the single biggest change. Infrared doesn't heat the air, it heats the surfaces — the tiles, the vanity, the towel rail, you. Standing in a beam of infrared on a cold morning feels closer to standing in weak winter sunshine than to standing in front of a radiator. The unit cost me €189 from a German brand called Vasner, and it pulls less power than my old kettle. Mine runs on a basic plug-in thermostat that costs €24 separately, which is honestly all the smarts you need.
- A heated towel rail with a programmable timer. Mine is a 600W dual-fuel unit from Vasco, and I have it set to come on for an hour at 6:15am and again for ninety minutes at 7pm. The "dual-fuel" bit matters if you have a combi boiler — it means the rail can run off either the central heating in summer, when the boiler is off, or off a small electric element when you don't want to fire up the whole system just for one towel. - A small 250W heated toilet seat. Sounds ridiculous. It is not ridiculous. The first cold morning you sit on a warm seat, you will never go back. Roughly €130, takes ten minutes to install, plugs into a standard socket via a discreet cable you tuck behind the cistern.
- A 1.5kW portable fan heater with thermostat, kept in a drawer. Used for emergencies — guests, sick days, the rare occasion I want the entire room genuinely toasty before a bath. Pulls more power than anything else on this list, which is why I keep it as a backup rather than a primary source. The Dimplex DXFF20T was €79.
- A thick thermal curtain on the frosted window. The single-pane window was leaking heat like a sieve. The total spend, ignoring labour (I did all the wiring myself where needed), was around €880. The total effect: a bathroom that goes from "actively hostile" to "comfortable enough to read in a t-shirt" inside about fifteen minutes, and stays that way for the cost of roughly a kettle's worth of electricity per hour.
What I have changed my mind about
I want to be honest about a few things I got wrong, because the "smart home" content around heating is full of bad advice from people who have never had to actually live with the products.
Underfloor heating is not always worth it. I went in convinced that electric underfloor heating mat under the tiles was the gold standard. I had a 4 square metre installation done in spring 2025 — €1,400 including an electrician and the tiler's time. The result is genuinely lovely under bare feet on a winter morning. But it pulls 150W per square metre, takes an hour to warm up, and if you forget to leave it on a timer (which I do, constantly), you are waiting until lunchtime for it to do anything useful. For a primary bathroom where you're in and out in twelve minutes, infrared plus a good towel rail is a better balance. If I were doing a full renovation on a large en-suite that the family actually uses for an hour every evening, that calculus changes. For my 6.5 square metre second bathroom, I would skip the mat and put the €1,400 toward better insulation.
Smart thermostats for bathrooms are mostly theatre. I tried a Hive mini, a Tado°, and a Netatmo. All three connected fine. All three let me set a schedule from my phone. None of them did anything my €12 mechanical timer plug couldn't do, and one of them (the Hive) lost its Wi-Fi connection roughly once every three weeks and required a manual reset that took ten minutes. If you already have a smart home ecosystem and enjoy fiddling with it, fine. If you just want a warm bathroom at 6:30am, a £10 plug from B&Q will serve you better.
Heat pump bathroom units are brilliant but only in specific houses. A neighbour installed a Mitsubishi mini-split heat pump unit that doubles as bathroom heating, and the running cost is genuinely extraordinary — something like 250W to heat the room to 22°C. But the unit cost €2,800 installed, the installer had to come back twice, and it sits on the wall like a small fridge. For a renovation or a new build, consider it seriously. For a retrofit where you just want to be less cold for less money, infrared is a better first move.
Smart upgrades to consider

Beyond the seven things I have actually installed, there are a handful of upgrades I have either tried briefly or researched heavily enough to have a view on. Some of these will land for you, depending on your bathroom, your budget, and how much of an enthusiast you are for indoor climate tinkering.
The category worth thinking about seriously is passive heating through retained thermal mass. The core insight is that a bathroom full of warm objects (a heated towel rail full of towels, a vanity that has been gently warmed by infrared, a thick bath mat absorbing heat) holds warmth far longer than air alone. This is why an infrared panel aimed at the towel rail, the vanity, and the bath mat works so much better than the same panel pointed at the empty centre of the room. Where you point your heater matters more than how powerful it is.
A second smart move is draught-proofing the door. A self-adhesive brush strip along the bottom of the bathroom door costs about €8 and stops the cold air corridor from the hallway. Combined with the thermal curtain on the window, this single change cut the audible chill in my bathroom noticeably.
A third upgrade, slightly more ambitious, is a ceiling-mounted far-infrared panel instead of a wall-mounted near-infrared unit. Far-infrared runs at lower surface temperatures (around 80–90°C versus 300°C+ for near-infrared), feels less direct, and can be plastered into the ceiling to look like a standard ceiling panel. The trade-off is cost: a 700W unit from Herschel is roughly €450 before installation. For a high-end renovation, it's worth considering. For everyone else, the wall-mounted near-infrared panel I bought for €189 does 90% of the job.
A final upgrade worth a serious mention is dehumidification as a heating strategy. A damp bathroom feels colder than a dry one at the same air temperature, because humid air pulls heat away from your skin faster. A small desiccant dehumidifier (the MeacoDry Arete One was £199) running for thirty minutes after a shower cuts condensation and makes the room feel noticeably warmer on the next visit. It is not heating in the strict sense, but it is heating in the way you actually experience it.
What to skip
Three categories of product I would not buy again, and I would steer you away from.
Candle-style oil-filled radiators sold as "portable bathroom heaters." They are slow to warm up, they are designed for rooms you sit in for hours, and they take up floor space that most bathrooms do not have. The fan heater I bought for €79 outperforms any of them for bathroom use.
"Designer" heated towel rails with integrated Wi-Fi and an app. I tried one. The app took four seconds to respond to a tap, the rail itself worked exactly as well as my €340 Vasco unit without the Wi-Fi, and the firmware update in March 2026 bricked the digital controller for two days. Just buy a plain heated towel rail with a manual thermostat and a £10 plug timer.
Bimetal "smart" thermostats from no-name Amazon brands. The temperature readings drift, the relay contacts are undersized, and one of them genuinely tripped the breaker on its third day in service. Stick with a recognised European heating brand — Honeywell, Danfoss, Eberle, Eberle, or even the OEM thermostat that came with your infrared panel.
The history
Bathroom heating has gone through three distinct phases in Europe, and knowing where we are now is useful for understanding where prices are likely to go next.
The first phase, roughly 1900 to 1970, was the era of the vertical cast-iron radiator — heavy, hot, beautiful, and often painted the same beige as the rest of the bathroom. These still exist in many older apartments and they heat a room incredibly well, but they require a hot water system running at temperature all winter, which most modern combi boilers are not designed to do for a single small room.
The second phase, 1970 to 2015, was the era of the electric wall-mounted fan heater. These are the units most people still have. They are cheap, they work, and they are desperately inefficient — most of the energy goes into warming air that rises to the ceiling and never returns. They are also, frankly, ugly.
The third phase, which we are in the middle of now, is the era of infrared and low-temperature surface heating. This is the first time in a hundred years that the underlying physics of bathroom heating has genuinely changed. Infrared panels are cheap to run, easy to install, can be controlled precisely, and are now made by enough European manufacturers (Herschel, Vasner, Könighaus, Thermosphere) that the price has come down sharply. A panel that cost €600 in 2018 costs €180 today.
The likely next phase, judging by what is in the trade press and what is being installed in new-build flats in Berlin and Amsterdam, is integrated heat pump ventilation. A single ceiling unit that warms the bathroom, extracts humidity, and quietly supplies pre-warmed fresh air from a heat exchanger. The technology is proven. The prices are still high — typically €3,500 to €5,000 installed — but in a new-build or major renovation context, the running cost savings versus resistance heating are enormous. I would not retrofit one. I would absolutely consider it for a future renovation.
The honest summary
If you take nothing else from this: in a typical small European bathroom, the highest-impact, lowest-cost combination is an infrared panel above the door, a properly sized heated towel rail with a timer, and a decent thermal curtain on the window. That trio, for somewhere between €500 and €800 installed, will turn most cold bathrooms into genuinely comfortable rooms for less than €5 a month in electricity.
If your budget allows, layer in underfloor heating only if you are already renovating the floor. Skip the smart home gimmicks — they cost more than they save and add failure modes you do not need. And if you live in a house where the heating system is easy to extend, consider whether a single extra radiator on the existing circuit might be the cheapest, longest-lasting solution of all. Sometimes the technology of 1955 still beats the technology of 2026.
A warm bathroom in winter should not be a luxury. Two winters of testing has convinced me it does not have to be.
